One thing i have noticed recently when i go out, is how people react to things that we are really used to seeing, especially in this day and age. That thing is the looks and stares i get every time i go out, i have to use a wheelchair but so do many other people in life, so why do people look so surprised to see someone in one? I go out and i find people looking which yes that is fine, but then there are the people who don't just look, no they are what i call the starer's!
I just don't understand it! In this day and age you would think people are used to seeing someone in a wheelchair. Children of course i expect them to take a few looks, as they don't understand really and that is fine i don't mind that, but when you find grown adults staring at me that i do mind! People are different out there from people on crutches, people in wheelchairs and people with other disabilities, but that does not give us the right to stop and stare at them for that. If you are interested or wondering what is wrong, then guess what you do, you ask and don't stare! People prefer it if you ask them, i know i would prefer it if people were to ask me why i am in a wheelchair, rather than them to stare at me going down the street.
I am no different to you apart from one thing. You can walk and i can't right now, but i still have feelings just like you and they get hurt just like you. I am the same as you! Just another human being!
I have friends who i know have the same thing happen to them, and guess what they are human too, and they have exactly the same feelings that get hurt like you and me. We have to stop and think about these things when we are out, that yes that person there has a disability and may be different in a way, but they are still human and they deserve to be able to go out, enjoy life and feel comfortable going down the street. They don't want to think about being stared at, or laughed at and pointed at, just because they are different in a little way.
So next time you want to know, just ask! Go up to that person and ask them why they have crutches, why they are in a wheelchair or what disability they have. They will be more willing to say if you ask them, i know i would.
I'm just like you! We are all human!
